Eligibility and records still matter
This tool estimates potential vehicle deductions and does not determine eligibility. The IRS standard mileage method has rules concerning vehicle ownership or leasing, prior depreciation methods, fleet use and method consistency. Commuting between home and a regular workplace is generally personal mileage rather than deductible business mileage. A contemporaneous mileage log and supporting records may be needed. If the standard mileage method is used, many actual vehicle operating costs cannot also be deducted for the same vehicle and year.
