Driver Detention Cost Calculator

Turn waiting time into driver cost, equipment time, lost productive capacity, missed-load exposure and a defensible detention charge — then see which customers are creating the biggest unrecovered loss.

Cost logicDirect hourly cost, productive-hour opportunity cost, fixed event cost and expected missed-load exposure are calculated separately. The minimum detention charge spreads the full economic loss across only the hours that are actually billable after the free-time allowance, then adjusts for expected collection, revenue deductions and the target margin.

Industry context

Detention is more than a driver-pay issue

ATRI reported that drivers experienced detention of more than two hours at 39.3% of stops in 2023, with higher rates in some segments. FMCSA notes that detention time is commonly discussed as dwell exceeding two hours, although there is no single standard definition. This calculator does not assume every carrier should use a two-hour threshold; the free-time allowance is user-entered.
