Reading the forecast
A sales goal becomes useful when it is translated into funnel activity.
A revenue target by itself does not tell a sales team what to do today. Working backward through average deal size and conversion rates turns the target into required customers, proposals, opportunities, qualified leads and top-of-funnel leads.
Conversion assumptions should come from your own recent sales history whenever possible. Even a small improvement in several funnel stages can sharply reduce the number of new leads required.
Required leadsThe top-of-funnel volume needed to support the final customer target.
Pipeline gapThe difference between the funnel you need and the funnel you already have.
Lead paceThe number of new leads the business needs to generate each month or week.
